Wright Brothers Institute ((WBI) is helping the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base community find its way with respect to adopting the DevSecOps principles laid out by the Department of Defense and DEVSECOPS. DevSecOps is the way forward for software development and deployment. It is key to achieving the software performance, speed, and agility capabilities needed against today's national threat environment. Adopting DevSecOps is a high priorityDoD imperative for all units.

Wright Patterson is one of only a handful of Air Force "centers of gravity" without a Chief Software Officer designated software factory. These Air Force software factories act as community hubs for software development knowledge and capability, DevSecOps pipeline maintenance and use, software development for warfighters, and as a platform for piloting and experimenting with new IT capability.

WBI was engaged to hold a sprint, bringing together representatives from 12 units across WPAFB, getting them up to speed on the DoD DevSecOps and software factory model. The sprint also explored the benefits of pursuing such a software factory at WPAFB, and formulated options for a way forward – including pursuing a full-up software factory.

As a result, the WPAFB developer community can make greater, faster strides toward implementing DevSecOps within and across the community, with immediate and dramatic effect on delivering warfighter capability.

WBI advocated for the sprint; worked with small core group to develop an approach; secured participation of teams from across the base; organized, administered, and facilitated a four-day (2 hours/day) sprint; and assisted spin off teams with follow-up work. WBI's efforts accelerated consideration of the software factory model and positioned base units to smartly choose a path forward and execute.
